Changing the narrative
Exodus 20:12 (NKJV) “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
Misinterpretation of scripture
Abovementioned scripture transcends cultures. It goes without saying that we should respect our elders. It is also the only commandment with a promise, ” so your days may be long”. The oxford dictionary describes honour as a great respect for somebody. Respect, is a feeling of approval. No where does it say that honour means calling a wrong, right. Honour to me, would be rewriting history, changing the narrative. In example, if one of your parents had an addiction, you remove the stigma, by making better choices. Your children are raised better. When people meet you, they will never believe that you come from a family of addicts. That is the highest form of honour.
